Mazie Lee Vetter Smith

Mrs. Mazie Lee Vetter Powell Smith, 66, died Saturday morning November 14, 2015 at her home in rural Lawrence County.
Services for Mrs. Smith were held on Saturday November 21, 2015 at Friendship M. B. Church, with Pastor David Collins, Jr. officiating. Interment was in the Friendship Cemetery, with Laird Mortuary in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Elmer “Lee Vaster” Powell and the late Lora Woodard Powell of rural Jefferson Davis County. At an early age, she joined the Silver Creek M. B. Church in New Hebron, and remained a member until she united with the North Pleasant Hill Church, prior to joining the Friendship Church, where she sang in the choir.

Mrs. Smith married the late Charles Smith in 1972 and to this union one daughter was added. In addition to being a great mother and grandmother, Mrs. Smith worked as a seamstress to support her family and loved gardening.

Mrs. Smith’s survivors included her daughter, Melody Powell; two grandchildren, Laquitta Powell Smith and Laquan Hilliard; three brothers, Lee Vaster (Lorraine) Powell ofMt. Olive, Jimmy Dudley Powell of Chicago, and Leon (Vanneta) Powell of Hattiesburg; two sisters, Maureen Dudley of Chicago, IL and Brenda Dudley of Italy; and two great-grandchildren.
