From the Center 2-8-17

There are several pages on Facebook that I follow that are simply for memories of days gone by. There is one for Prentiss, and I enjoy seeing the old pictures posted and stories of days at the drive-inn and favorite teachers. I think pages like that are the best thing about Facebook.

George Daley started doing some work on my house yesterday. Apparently, 114-year-old homes need frequent attention. Very frequent.

George and I went to the Lee & Company building (it will always be Lee & Company to me) to search for some old wood for his repairs.

We made it exactly two steps into the shoe store, when he said, “Man, I remember this place. I got my favorite pair of bell-bottom jeans here.”

I almost teared up.

While bell-bottom jeans were long gone by the time I came around, I still have my own memories of Lee & Company.

Hanging on the rails and getting in trouble would be my most vivid memory. I also remember standing at the top of the stairs trying to figure out if Uncle Bubba was in a good mood…or bad. He had the same expression for every mood, and I just wasn’t going to go down those steps to look for shoes if I thought it might not be a good idea.

And the price tags. They hurt! They were pinned or stapled on the clothes and every time mom made me try on something I think I ended up bleeding.

With all that being said, I think we would all enjoy hearing memories of Prentiss and Jefferson Davis County.

If you will email your favorite memory to editor@prentissheadlight.com, I will create a memory section and include it in each week’s paper. If you have photos, send those as well. We might not have all the businesses we once had and the schools will soon change, so let’s remember the old times together!
