Graveside services were held Friday, Feb. 12, 2021, at Oak Grove Baptist Church in New Hebron, for Mrs. Essie Jones Powell, 93, who died Saturday, Feb. 6, 2021, at her residence.  Rev. E. L. Powell officiated with Johnson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Flossie Jones Powell was born in Prentiss, and educated at Cedar Grove and Prentiss Institute. She was a retired Cosmetologist and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Heroines of Jericho and Breeland Cosmetology Group.

Mrs. Powell loved fishing, gardening, and spending time with family and friends.

She was married to the late Essie Lee Powell and to this union eight children were born.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Henry, Alton, Alfonzo, Cecil, Paul, Joe, Jessie James and L. C. Jones; sisters, Georgia Barnes, Catlina Jones, Annie Lou Jones, Rose Jackson and Iris N. Lee.

Mrs. Powell is survived by her children, Charles (Sherlie) Powell of Prentiss; Rev. E. L. (Nicole) Powell, Jr. of Bogalusa, Louisiana; Minister Sherman (Christine) Powell of New Albany; Lucile (J.B.) Powell of Magee; Luvenia Weathersby of Prentiss; Rosie Powell and Luvenia Weathersby both of New Hebron; one sister, Edna Scott of Detroit, Michigan and eighteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
