Funeral services for Mr. David Allen Courtney were conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday morning, Jan. 27, 2022, at Bassfield Baptist Church. Interment followed in the Wilkes Cemetery. Rev. Ken Roberts and Rev. Tom Jackson officiated.
Saulters Moore Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
David Allen Courtney passed away Monday, Jan. 24, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Jan. 7, 1950, to Vardaman and Elma Bullock Courtney in Bassfield. David was a member of Bassfield Baptist Church where he was an ordained deacon.
After graduating from Bassfield High School, he married his high school sweetheart, Jan Shivers Courtney and they enjoyed 52 years of marriage. David attended Pearl River Junior College, where he was a member of the football team that won the 1969 State Championship. He retired from the Kansas City Railroad where he was a supervisor. David loved working with his cows and was an avid horse lover. He and Jan loved taking trail rides and they, along with their friends, went on numerous trail rides in numerous states. David’s greatest love was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and he never turned down an opportunity to baby sit.
David is preceded in death by his parents, Vardaman and Elma Courtney, his sister, Betty Hudson and sister-in-law, Edna Courtney.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jan Shivers Courtney of Bassfield; two sons, Brian (DeAnn) Courtney of Sumrall and Scott (Joy) Courtney of Bassfield; one sister, Linda Pennington of Prentiss; one brother, Jack Courtney of Clinton and a brother-in-law, Woodly Hudson of Hattiesburg. David’s memory will also be cherished by his grandchildren, Channing Courtney, Jean-Elizabeth Courtney, Katelyn Rawls, Hunter Courtney, Trevor Courtney, Brody Courtney and five great-grandchildren, along with two great-grandchildren that are on the way.
The family received friends Thursday morning, Jan. 27, 2022, from 9 a.m. until the hour of service at 11 a.m. at Bassfield Baptist Church.
