Excitement was in the air Dec. 9 in Prentiss and Bassfield as both towns celebrated Christmas with parades and other festivities. The Prentiss parade was held at 10 a.m. led by Grand Marshal Charlene Fairley, Jefferson Davis County Chancery Clerk. The theme for this year’s parade was “A Longleaf Christmas: Ways we celebrate Christmas in the South.”
The parade was sponsored by the Jefferson Davis County Chamber of Commerce.
Prizes were awarded for the top three entries in the parade with M.G.O., Moore Companies and Holmes and Moore winning first place. Second place was awarded to Farm Bureau. The House of Refuge was awarded third place.
It was a Country Christmas in Bassfield as vendors filled the park for the annual Christmas in the Park. The parade was held at 2 p.m. with James “Slim” Hinton honored as the Grand Marshal.
Christmas in the Park offered an array of activities and attractions for all ages including train rides and a range of games featuring a slide, an obstacle course, karaoke and line dancing, offering entertainment for everyone in the family.
Jackie Miller read The Christmas Story and photo opportunities with Santa were also available.
Ted Applewhite was the lucky winner of the $500 raffle.
At dusk, the celebration concluded with a Christmas fireworks display sponsored by Big Pop Fireworks of Laurel. Over 25 food and merchandise vendors were also part of the Christmas event.
“This event would not have been possible without the dedicated Town of Bassfield employees, the board of alderman, volunteers, vendors and sponsors,” said Bassfield Mayor Angie Ladner.
Sponsors included MGD Holdings, Good Hope Water Association, Moore Companies, Dorothy Barnes, A. F. Carraway, Colleen Powell, King Lumber, Dungan Engineering, Marvez Fairley, JDC Board of Supervisors, Randy Hathorn, J and J Market and Bassfield Hair Studio.
“We would like to thank each and every person that played any part of this event with a special thank you to our 13 wonderful sponsors that help make this event so successful.”
