The family received friends Thursday, June 6, 2024, from 1 p.m. until the hour of service at 3 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

“Miss Evelyn”, as everyone called her, was born on Nov. 12, 1928, in Jefferson Davis County to Frank and Anna Fortenberry Bridges. A devoted minister’s wife, homemaker, and cherished mother of six children, she exemplified unwavering love and dedication to her family and community.

Miss Evelyn’s journey on this earth was marked by profound kindness and selflessness.   Raised in the Whitesand Community, she married Sutton Smith in 1946 and moved to the Mt. Zion Community.  Shortly thereafter, she embarked on her life’s calling and embraced the role of a minister’s wife after he surrendered to the Gospel Ministry. For many years, the happy family moved to several different communities and towns pastoring different churches. In addition, her commitment to family values shone brightly as she lovingly served as a devoted housewife and nurtured their six children.

Miss Evelyn’s days were filled with warmth and joy as she welcomed her family home during holidays with open arms and a heart full of love. The aromas emanating from her kitchen told stories of tradition and comfort – from chess squares to tea cakes, every treat was made with love. Her holiday table overflowed with delicious specialties like strawberry pie and red velvet cake, creating memories that will forever linger in the hearts of her children and grandchildren.

In addition to her roles as a devoted wife and mother, Miss Evelyn found fulfillment in her latter years by serving her community through various endeavors. Her time spent working at Jitney Jungle, Lee’s Pigskins, and KLH Industries showcased her strong work ethic and willingness to contribute wherever needed.

A proud member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Miss Evelyn held a special place within the congregation as the oldest member known for spreading joy among the young ones. Fondly referred to as the “candy lady,” she had a special bond with children whom she showered with sweet treats every Sunday.

In addition to her parents, Frank and Anna Fortenberry Bridges, she is preceded in death by her husbands, Rev. Sutton C. Smith and Dr. J.W. Whitehead; brothers, Ben, Mike, Howard, and Webb Bridges and one grandson, Austin Smith.

Her memory will forever be cherished by three daughters, Anna Stafford (Bobby) of Carson, Margaret Havard (James) of Lucedale, Linda Chance (Dwight) of New Hebron; three sons, James Smith (Dianne), C.A. Smith (Laurie) both of Magee and Wayne Smith (Charlotte) of Richland.  She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great grandchildren.
