JDC Supervisors issue countywide burn ban

The Jefferson Davis County Board of Supervisors met for the second October meeting Monday morning at the board room in Prentiss. District 2 Supervisor Ricky Barrett opened with prayer before the board adopted the agenda.

The board issued a burn ban for all of Jefferson Davis County. A combination of dry air, relative humidity and gusty winds increased the fire danger in the county last week. The ban is in place until the next board meeting, Nov. 4, at which time the board will extend or lift the ban. Anything with an open flame that produces an ember is prohibited during a burn ban. This includes campfires, bonfires, fire pits, fire rings, burn barrels, debris burning and field burning.

According to the Mississippi Forestry Commission, the wind can carry floating embers away from the original fire and start a spot fire up to one-half mile away from the burning area.

Grills, gas and charcoal, will be the only thing allowed to use and should be used with extreme caution.

Any person who knowingly and willfully violates a burning ban is guilty of a misdemeanor and may be fined not less than $100 and not more than $500.

JDC Veteran Service Officer Joe Bridges informed the board of the details of the Veterans Program to be held Nov. 9 in Prentiss.

JDC Chief Deputy Frank Riley discussed the possibility of the Jefferson Davis County Sheriff’s

Department using the Fuelman service for the county’s fuel. Fuelman is a US-based company that provides fuel cards and fleet management programs for businesses and government fleets. Currently, the county utilizes two tanks at the rear of the JDC Courthouse that provide fuel to the JDC Sheriff’s Department and other JDC Administration. There is also a tank at each district barn.

Fuelman offers fuel cards that can be customized to control costs and ensure money is only spent on fuel for company vehicles. It also offers rebates on gas and diesel fuel. The board asked Riley to bring more detailed information regarding Fuelman to next month’s board meeting for further discussion.

Board Attorney Wes Daughdrill and CPA Cathy Slocum gave their reports.
