Lighting of Prentiss and Bassfield Christmas in the Park dates announced

The Christmas season is going to be in full swing in Jefferson Davis County at the end of this month, starting with the Lighting of Prentiss on Nov. 30 at 4 p.m.

A group of committed community members, Friends of Prentiss, has been leading the effort to provide Christmas lights and decorations in the Longleaf Trace Park and along Columbia Avenue.

The group held fundraisers over the last few months to begin the beautification project.

Along with the lighting of the Christmas Tree, Photos with Santa and hot chocolate will be available.

The event will feature the Voices of Pearl River Community College, along with other singers and performances including the JDC Mass Choir.

The Prentiss Christmas Parade will be held Dec. 12 at 6 p.m. It will begin at the Jeffersonian Motor Inn and will conclude at Fifth Street.

The parade is sponsored by the Jefferson Davis County Chamber of Commerce. Prizes will be awarded for the top three entries in the parade.

Four-wheelers will not be allowed to participate.

Bassfield Christmas in the Park will be held on Dec. 14 and will include food, Selfies with Santa, a mechanical bull, arts and crafts, Split-the-Pot, scavenger hunt, line dancing and more. All festivities will be held in the heart of Bassfield at Faler Park.

Wrist bands will be available for $5 and can be used throughout the day for Selfies with Santa, arts and crafts and the scavenger hunt.

Bassfield’s first Chili Cook-Off will take place from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m. at $5 per entry. The deadline for entry is Dec. 6. Forms and rules are available at Bassfield City Hall.

Raffle tickets for Split-the-Pot are also $5 each and are available at Bassfield City Hall and will be available in the park the day of the event.

The Bassfield Christmas Parade will be held at 2 p.m. with Evan Price as the grand marshal.

Prizes will be given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place entries.
