Veterans honored in JDC

Several events were held throughout Jefferson Davis County over the Veterans Day holiday weekend.

Jefferson Davis County’s Third Annual Veterans Day Parade, Program and Antique Car Show was held Nov. 9 in downtown Prentiss.

The event was presented by the Jefferson Davis County Veterans Service Office, NAACP Veter-ans Committee and the Jefferson Davis County Chamber of Commerce.

Grand Marshal for the parade was Army Maj. Trygve Reeves (Ret.) of Mount Olive. Reeves served as a Federal Government employee for 42 years and is a 1977 Tuskegee University Graduate.

There were over 25 participants in the parade including a military vehicle, firetrucks, bikes cars and trucks.

Following the parade, a program was held in the Longleaf Trace Park.

The welcome was given by LaTonya Ramsey, greetings by Dr. SurBrina Mason and prayer by David Lee.

The National Anthem was sung by Lucy McInnis followed by the introduction of the speaker by Janice Cunningham.

The speaker was Army Lt. Col. Frederick Eugene Varnado (Ret.) who served as the Jefferson Davis County ROTC Officer/Instructor following his military retirement.

A musical performance was provided by the Jefferson Davis County High School Band.

The recognition of Veterans was given by SFC Joe Bridges and Rosie Powell. The announcements were given by Missy Jones and awards were presented by Dr. Mason.

The first place antique car winner was Don White. The first place truck winner was Steve Mahood and second place winner was James D. Lee.

First place motorcycle winner was Eddie Jenkins. The second place Spider Bike winner was  Earnest McCullum and third place was LaJoyce Gray .

Closing remarks were given by SFC Joe Bridges and prayer by Army Maj. Walt Moeller (Ret.).

The winners of the South Central Chapter of MSAPRI giveaway were, Shirley Hunter Shaq and Carolyn Jenkins.
