As the winter solstice approaches, the Prentiss, Carson and Bassfield communities are continuing the preparations for a spectacular event that promises to bring warmth and light to the longest night of the year.

“The Light Up the Trace Luminaria Event is a unique and meaningful way to celebrate the season, all while contributing to the safety, security and illumination of our beloved Longleaf Trace,” said JDC Economic Development Director Gary Bass.

This Saturday, the Longleaf Trace will be transformed into a breathtaking display of lights, thanks to the efforts of the community and the purchase of luminarias.

Along with the  luminarias, music and food and other festive events will be held at each of the four stations: Prentiss, Carson, Bassfield and Prentiss Institute’s historic Rosenwald School.

The opening ceremony in Carson will be at 5 p.m. and will feature a live nativity from 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.

Prentiss and Bassfield will have their opening ceremony at 6 p.m.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of this event is the opportunity to dedicate a luminaria in honor or memory of someone special. Whether it’s to celebrate the life of a loved one, pay tribute to a friend, or commemorate a special occasion, the Light Up the Trace Luminaria Event provides a platform for the community to come together in remembrance and celebration.

The purchase of each luminaria not only adds a personal touch to the event but also contributes to essential funds for the safety, security and lighting of the Longleaf Trace.

Luminarias are available at AF Carraway Store in Bassfield, Je-Loru’s Florist in Prentiss, Carson Baptist Church Youth, Friends of Prentiss and Bassfield City Hall. They can also be purchased online at lightupthetrace.com or by contacting the Economic Development District office at 601-792-5903 or JDCEconDevAssistant@gmail.com.

In case of rain, the event will be on New Year’s Eve.
