A winter storm warning has now been issued for Jefferson Davis County by the National Weather Service of Jackson. The warning begins at midnight Jan 21 and extends until midnight Jan. 22.
Heavy snow is expected with accumulations up to four inches. Roads will likely become snow covered and hazardous to travel.
All schools in the Jefferson Davis County School District, Prentiss Christian School, Bassfield City Hall and all Jefferson Davis County governmental offices have announced closure for Jan. 21. The Jefferson Davis County Board of Supervisors meeting scheduled for Tuesday morning has been postponed until Thursday at 8:30 a.m.
Due to the very cold temperatures well below freezing, any snow accumulating on roadways will result in treacherous conditions. Travel impacts will likely continue well beyond the end of the snow.
Weak branches could break, downing power lines in areas of highest snow accumulation posing a risk for isolated power outages.
“This is a serious weather event,” said Jefferson Davis County Emergency Management Director Jocelyn Ragsdale. “As always, please make necessary preparations prior to the event as preparedness saves lives,” she said.
Ragsdale also encourages everyone to avoid any unnecessary travel as roads will be very dangerous. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
