After several rounds of severe weather impacted Jefferson Davis County recently, JDC Emergency Management Director Jocelyn Ragsdale is urging residents to register for CodeRED emergency notification system.
CodeRED Weather Warning is an opt-in only weather warning product that taps into the National Weather Service’s Storm Based Warnings.
CodeRED Weather Warning automatically alerts affected citizens in the direct path of severe weather just moments after a warning has been issued.
“Code Red is available to all citizens,” said Ragsdale. “Please take advantage of another method of receiving warnings and notifications,” she said.
With CodeRED, state and local agencies can deliver geo-targeted, time-sensitive information to individuals who have registered to receive alerts.
Notifications can be sent via email, SMS, voice, mobile app push notifications, IPAWS and more depending on the severity of the situation.
This system is precise enough to geotarget residents within an exact area of impact, so only those who are affected by the situation are notified.
It’s used to alert residents and businesses through a variety of channels of time-sensitive information, emergencies or urgent notifications.
Along with severe weather, alerts may be sent out “area specific” for chemical spills and HAZMAT incidents, viral outbreaks, evacuation notices, missing children and persons, boil water notices, power outages and police activity and updates.

“All it takes is a few minutes of your time to opt-in and customize your types of alerts,” said Ragsdale. “The life saved may be your own, or a loved one. Preparedness saves lives.”
