Supervisors vote to apply for recreation grant

The Jefferson Davis County Board of Supervisors met for the second meeting of February Tuesday morning in Prentiss.

The meeting opened with prayer by District 2 Supervisor Ricky Barrett before the minutes were approved.

Jefferson Davis County Economic Development Director Gary Bass made a request for repairs to the damaged billboard on Highway 84 at the Industrial Park with a plan for new signage.

He is also working on a Downton Revitalization Grant for both Prentiss and Bassfield.

Emlyn Jackson with Southern Mississippi Planning and Development offered assistance to the county with any upcoming projects and encouraged board to use available funds for site development.

She urged the board to have a site “shovel ready” to attract potential business.

JDC Engineer Les Dungan discussed the application for the Wildlife Fisheries Outdoor Recreational Grant.

This is a $150,000 project that is to be used for parks or recreation such as walking trails, pavilions or rest areas.

The board approved beginning the application process and will use the funding for restrooms at the John Thompson Athletic Complex in Bassfield.

If awarded, the county will receive $120,000 for the project and would contribute the remaining $30,000.

The board approved the appointment of David Miller to the Prentiss-Jefferson Davis County Airport Board for District 1.

The board opened bids and approved the quote from Southern Measurement for $6,190.29 for a generator for the Williamson Mill Fire Department.

Board attorney Wes Daughdrill and accountant Cathy Slocum gave end-of-the month reports.

In other board news, the board approved the following without opposition before entering into executive session over a personnel matter and adjourning:

• Approved minutes.

• Approved Board members signing Road Inspection Affidavits.

• Approved Board President signing Waste Tire Collection Assistance Grant with Department of Environmental Quality.

• Approved Board President signing Rental Agreement with Pitney Bowes.

Approved payment of invoice to Southern Mississippi Planning and Development District for $11,565.95.

• Approved overages on Purchase Order 250195 in District 5 Solid Waste.

• Approved employees attending meetings and conventions.

• Approved reimbursement to Dedra Johnson for post office box rent for $120.00.

• Approved spreading into the minutes Employee Action Forms for the Sheriff’s Department and District 4.

• Approved payment of CDL training class and license for employees.

• Approved spreading into the minutes order from Judge Harrell approving CloudGavel Contract and Cost Sharing (electric warrant services) for $2,000,

• Approved spreading into the minutes inmate invoice to Mt. Olive Police Department for November 2024, December 2024 and January 2025.

• Approved spreading into the minutes the jail meal log and invoice to Town of Prentiss for January 2025.

• Approved spreading into the minutes Fuelman report and invoice for February 2025.

• Approved destruction of records.

• Approved claims.
