Flores, Huber win 39th Run for the Roses

It was a beautiful day for the  runners and walkers Saturday morning during the 39th annual Run for the Roses 5K Run/Walk held in downtown Prentiss.

Juan Flores was the first runner to cross the finish line with a time of 19:30.

The first female to cross the finish line was Lauren Huber with a time of 21.59.

Roxanne Morris with a time of 26:10 and Jamie Trichell with a time of 21:49 were the Masters winners.

The Grand Masters male winner was Jeff Hathorn with a time of 25:14. There was no female Grand Masters winner.

The 5K walk winner was Nestor Anzola with a time of 34:01. Lindsay Barnes was the first female walker to cross the finish line with a time of 45:32.

Masters walk winners were Charles Atkins and Martha Harroff. Atkins had a time of 38:41. Harroff crossed the finish line at 46:12.

D.P. Scarborough with a time of 44:21 and Traci Whitfield with a time of 48:11 were the Grand Master walk winners.

Scarborough was also the oldest participant at age 81. “I’m just glad to be here,” said Scarborough.

Fourteen-year-old  Daniel Jordan was the fastest one-mile runner turning in a time of 7:07.

Sadie Wilson, 9,  was the fastest female one-mile runner with a time of 8:42.

A 1/4 mile preschool run for children six years of age and younger was the final race of the day.

Roses were provided by Je-Loru’s Florist and Gwen’s Florist. Breakfast items and fruit for the participants were provided by Piggly Wiggly, Ward’s of Prentiss, Phantastic Donuts and Polk’s Meat Products.

Members of the Mayors’ Youth Council and Carson Baptist Church Youth volunteered by making race preparations and distributing water on the course.

Registration fee proceeds from the race will be used to support the college scholarship fund and community improvement projects.

MS Race Timing timed all run events with chip timing.

All participants were eligible to win multiple awards.

In conjunction with the Run for the Roses 5K event, high school seniors will have an opportunity to compete for scholarship funds to be applied to higher education expenses at the institution of their choice.

Applicants must be a resident of Jefferson Davis County, a high school senior graduating in 2025 and must be enrolled in Jefferson Davis County High School or Prentiss Christian School.

Along with the completed application, applicants must write a 200-word essay.

Scholarships will be chosen based on the essay and how the student defends his or her answer. It will not be based on ACT score or grade point average.

Winners of the $750 scholarship will be announced at senior awards day at JDCHS and PCS. Scholarship money will be sent to the college of the recipient’s choice upon proof of registration.

Over 10 food and craft vendors were set up in the Longleaf Trace Park through the afternoon including  Tasheka Foreman-Joshua, R&T lemonade, snowballs, popcorn and more; T&R purses, accessories and more; Lavornne Benson African attire, hot dogs, drinks, jewelry and hair growth oil; Caribbean Ice; Suzette King, King and King Creations gift baskets; JDCH Junior Class fish plates; Easter baskets, South Central MS APRI raffle and Lala’s Snoballs.

The Vendor Market was sponsored by the Jefferson Davis County Chamber of Commerce.
