Historical marker unveiling held at Prentiss Institute

Holley Cochran / The Prentiss Headlight—The dedication and unveiling of the historical marker at Prentiss Institute was held April 26.

The dedication of the state historical marker for the 1907 founding of Prentiss Institute was held April 26 beginning at 10 a.m.

The program started with a performance by the Carver Elementary School Choir before prayer was provided by Dr. Jason McLeod followed by the welcome by Queen Sutton.

Program facilitators were Dr. Subrina Mason and Natalie Bell. Speakers were former student Rosie Powell and museum chairperson Janice Armstrong.

The marker was unveiled by Dr. Alvin Williams, son of PNII faculty, and Al Wethers Johnson, grandson of PNII founders Jonas Edward and Bertha Johnson. The marker gives a brief history of the college.

Guests enjoyed lunch, entertainment and reflections following the unveiling.

Music was provided by soloist Dr. Sebronette Abram and saxophonist Thomas Johnson.

The marker was sponsored by The Foot Soldiers Journey, Inc., Prentiss Institute National Alumni Association and the Jefferson Davis County Economic Development District.
