Mr. Leahmon Howard Hartzog, 94, passed away May 14 at Hospice Ministries in Jackson. He was born on January 16, 1920, in Hooker, MS, and was the first child of L.H. and Esther Hartzog.

Mr. Hartzog was pre-deceased by three sisters, Marie Hartzog McGaughey of Green Cove Springs, FL, Bettie Ruth Hartzog Reinebold of Phoenix, AZ, and Louise Hartzog Price, of Jackson, MS.

He is survived by two nephews and one neice, John Howard McGaughey of Green Cove Springs, FL; Charles T. Reinebold, III of Phoenix, AZ, and Dorothy Price Nixon of Senatobia, MS.

The Hartzog family moved to New Hebron, MS, when Howard was four years old. He graduated from New Hebron High and then attended Mississippi College, where he graduated with a degree in business.

Mr. Hartzog joined the Navy in 1942 and served three years during WWII. He also served during the Korean War. Following his military deployments, he worked briefly in the business world before moving to California where he taught school for 30 years.

When he retired from teaching, he again made New Hebron his home for the past 29 years.

Mr. Hartzog donated his body to the anatomical services department of UMC because he believed that research done there might help others.

A memorial service was held at the New Hebron Methodist Church on Sunday, June 1st at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that any gifts honoring Mr. Hartzog be sent to the New Hebron Public Library (please designate New Hebron) or to the New Hebron Attendance Center Library.
