Interim Superintendent John Daley reported to the board that school has gotten off to a great start.

“I have personally visited each and every school.  Students are doing what they are asked. Being a former high school principal, it was good to see our younger students excited about school and already learning.  Teachers were up teaching on day one and that is positive for our schools,” Daley said.

Dr. Crystal Haynes reported that Carver’s enrollment was only down five students this year.  “So far we have 360 students in our school.  Teachers are up teaching.  Our week has gone ‘scary smooth’,” said Haynes.

Will Russell, Principal at Bassfield High School, reported 316 students enrolled as of Monday.   “High expectations have been set for this year for Bassfield High.  Teachers have been told to ‘Teach inspire and challenge every student, no excuses’,” stated Russell.

“We have identified the top 10 discipline problems from last year.   Our goal this year is to decrease our discipline problem and increase our attendance,” he added.

Jason McLeod, J.E. Johnson Principal, presented his goals to the board, with the first one to be an increase in overall student achievement.

“We want to maintain a safe, orderly, and nurturing environment for the children.  We hope to increase parental and community  involvement and decrease the number of disciplinary referrals,” said McLeod.

“We have increased our enrollment by 47 children and are very proud of that.  Our enrollment is now 475,” he added.

Prentiss High School Principal Pete Howell tells the board he has 429 students enrolled so far.

“Every child that has left, we have had a new one enroll.  Our numbers have been steady,” said Howell.

“Prentiss has started out well this year.  I received a text from a teacher with 30 years experience who told me that in 10 years she has not seen school open as calmly and quietly as it did this year.  The teachers, administration and students are off to a good start and I see good things in our future,” Howell added.

Dr.  Su’brina Mason announced that substitute teacher training will be September  5, at 7:30 a.m., at the Vo-Tech.

Test scores  from last school year will be released sometime after August 15.
