JDC Hospital gives back with Community Health Fair

Jeff Davis Community Hospital presented free services at its 17th bi-annual Health Fair held Oct. 30th.
Though the morning was cool the warmth of the bright sun increased the number of those who took advantage of free blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose checks, hearing and bone density checks, as well as prostrate screenings and head, neck and oral exams.
Many came to get information provided at booths of various community service vendors. Door prizes were given away and homemade snacks were available to attendees.
Shirley Burnham / The Prentiss Headlight—Health Fair Coordinator Sherry Turnage expressed appreciation for those who participated in the Health Fair and for community support of ECF, JDC Hospital and its services.
Event Coordinator Sherry Turnage said, “We provide the health fair biannually as a service to give back to the community for their support of us.” Turnage explained, “This is a joint effort. Many local doctors and ECF and hospital employees are involved. It gives us a chance to let the community know about the services we provide including the geriatric-psych unit, intensive outpatient program, nursing home and wellness center as well as outpatient therapy.”
Turnage went on to say, “We invite vendors from the community to share information on their services such as medical equipment and volunteer programs. This year we were lucky enough to have Life Flight bring their helicopter and our area high school students enjoyed a tour. Proceeds from the lunch today go to the Relay for Life.”
Information booths included Lawrence County Center for Pregnancy Choices, Pine Grove Mental Health, Forrest General Hospital Heart Attack Program, Breast Cancer Awareness, JDC Health Dept. with flu and pneumonia information, MS State Extension promoting good dietary habits, Forrest General Hospital Home Health/Hospice, Dubard School of Speech & Hearing, Sojourners GeriPsych Unit and JDCH Intensive Outpatient Program information, Norwood Medical Supply, JDCH Opt Therapy, MC Medical with heart attack information, DME South Medical Equipment and Life Flight.
Local doctors participated in the Fair including Dr. Earl Mahaffey- prostate screening, Dr. James R. Dumas-head, neck and oral exams, Dr. Cynthia Mouton-breast cancer awareness information and Dr. Scott Paladichuk-Eye Associates of Hattiesburg.1.
