Unity in the Community is a civic organization created to promote the goodness of Jefferson Davis County and foster changes to make it a great place for all who live here.
Unity was able to achieve the organizational goals in set in 2014 by either coordinating and hosting its own events or supporting civil projects led by others.
During 2014, this diverse group of local citizens volunteered to take part in civic projects such as county -wide trash cleanup, Run for the Roses, and community parades.
For the second year in a row, Unity in the Community hosted a free public concert by Pearl River Community College Jazz Cats Band and a popular 4th of July Fireworks Celebration in the Town of Prentiss.
The group also hosted two new events in 2014. The first was a public informational meeting in which professors from the university of Southern Mississippi spoke to community members about ways an oral history project could be carried out and how such project could aid in the economic development of our county.
The second event was a hospitality table at the county football championship game. Unity fans of both teams, Bassfield and Prentiss, came together to cheer on their teams while offering free water to fans and reminding everyone that all are winners when citizens work together for common good.
By coordinating efforts with the Sheriff’s Department and Board of Supervisors, Unity in the Community took part in a Thanksgiving Food Drive. Members made Thanksgiving Boxes for needy families in our county.
At the end of 2014, Unity members provided small gift bags and some Christmas cheer to residents of the local extended care facility.
Unity in the Community’s first meeting of 2015 will take place Feb. 5th in the county courthouse at 5 p.m.
Civic groups who need support for upcoming projects or citizens who wish to work together with others to make Jefferson Davis County be its best, are welcome to attend.
