The South Mississippi Regional Library System’s Children’s Librarian Ryda Worthy helped local children celebrate the end of the Winter Reading Program at the Prentiss and Bassfield libraries with a special event featuring Pete, the Cat whose great adventures have given the children much delight. Pete found out that you can have a wonderful joyful day without needing any special sunglasses to see the best around you and Worthy passed that information on to the children in a skit featuring Pete and his friends.
The program that kicked off in December encouraged children to read books and place a snowflake in a special designated area in the library for each visit as visual accomplishment. Crafts, a selfie station, free books and prizes all were utilized in the encouragement process to get the children reading more.
“This is our first winter reading program and it seems to have had a positive response,” stated Worthy. She states another along with the summer reading program is already in the plans for next year.
Reading is the foundation for success and our local libraries are a treasure-trove of current books that will challenge, educate and entertain children and adults. Get in the habit of visiting your local library and utilizing the many services they provide.
