Kermitt Newsome

Mr. Kermitt Newsome, age 78, died March 28, 2015, at the Wesley Medical Center in Hattiesburg. Services for Mr. Newsome were held on April 1, at Spring Hill MB Church, with Rev. Toni Reimonenq officiating. Interment was in the Green Grove Cemetery, with Laird Mortuary in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Newsome was the son of the late Ellis Newsome and Hattie Ross of rural Jefferson Davis County. At an early age, Mr. Newsome developed a passion for hunting with his hunting dogs.

After being reared and educated in the Prentiss area, Mr. Newsome joined the U.S. Navy, and served faithfully until he received his honorable discharge in 1955. Mr. Newsome returned to Prentiss after serving his country, completing his education at Prentiss Institute and receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from Alcorn State University. In 1970, Mr. Newsome married the former Calmetta Collins of Prentiss, and to this union six children were added.

Mr. Newsome’s survivors include his loving wife, Calmetta C. Newsome of Prentiss; his mother, Hattie Johnson of Prentiss; six children, Sedrick (Terri) Armstrong of Cincinnati, OH, Felecia (Sammy) Washington of Gulfport, Terrance Hyde of Hattiesburg, Katrina (Perry) Grady of Dekalb, LaVarshia (Henry) Pittman of Tylertown, and Chauncey Newsome of Horn Lake; two sisters, Overa D. Norwood of Gulfport, and Nora Newsome of Prentiss; two brothers, Herman Newsome of Forrest and McKinley Newsome of Prentiss; and 14 grandchildren.
