Graveside services were held Wednesday, March 3, 2021, at Holisday Creek Baptist Church in Carson, for Mr. Alter Lee Sherma, Sr., 77, who died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2021 at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg.

Pastor Mirett Rhodes officiated with Johnson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Alter Lee Sherman was born to the late Alton and Velma Sherman and was raised by Oliver and Hermeo Stewart.

He graduated from Carver High School and went into the farm industry.

He married the late Doris Fortenberry Sherman and to this union, one son, the late Conant Al Sherman and Ernie T. Sherman were born.

He began working at Ingall’s Shipyard as a supervisor and met Annie Sherman Pitts and to this union came Tretease Sherman and Alter Lee Sherman Jr. and Jermaine Gordon.

He later married Joyce Sherman, no children were born to this union.

He was a member of Blackmon Temple C.M.E. Church; he later moved to Hattiesburg and joined Priest Creek Baptist Church.

He is survived by his daughter, Tretease Shermain of Hattiesburg; sons, Alter Sherman Jr., Jermaine (Stephanie) Gordan both of Hattiesburg; Ernie Sherman of Columbia; sisters, Audrey Greenford of Texas, Yolanda (Florida) Sherman, Linda (Adam) Gibson of Louisiana; brother, Alton E. (Cindy) of California; and Charles Sherman of Georgia; grandchildren; great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
