The annual Run for the Roses 5K event has been canceled again for 2022. This is the third year the run will not be held due to COVID-19.
However, the race committee will still be awarding scholarships to local high school seniors.
Seniors in the county will have an opportunity to compete for scholarship funds to be applied to higher education expenses at the institution of their choice.
Applicants must be a resident of Jefferson Davis County, a high school senior graduating in 2022 and must be enrolled in Jefferson Davis County High School or Prentiss Christian School.
The Run for the Roses Scholarship of $750 will be awarded to one high school senior from Jefferson Davis High School and Prentiss Christian School.
Along with the completed application, an essay of 200 words answering “How has your senior year been affected by the coronavirus pandemic?” is required. Students are asked to give specific details on the impact it has personally had on their lives.
Scholarships will be chosen based on the essay and how the student defends his or her answer.
It will not be based on ACT score or grade point average.
Scholarship money will be sent to the college of the recipients choice upon proof of registration.
Applications can be found on the Run for the Roses 5K Facebook page.
The deadline for entry will be announced at a later date, but will be toward the end of the school year. For more information call race director Missy Jones at 601-792-5741.
