Laura Jean Young

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022, at Zion Community Church of God in Oakvale for Mrs. Laura Jean Johnson Young, 66, who died on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2022, at The Grove in Columbia. Rev. Isaac Carter officiated with interment following in the church cemetery. Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Laura Jean Young was born to the late Clay Lee Gatlin Johnson and Albert Johnson, Sr. She graduated from Prentiss High School in 1973. She continued her education at Jackson State University, Jackson, Mississippi where she earned her Bachelors, Masters and Specialist degrees.
Mrs. Young spent most of her teaching years in Jefferson Davis County, teaching middle school math and science. She retired in 2006 after twenty-eight years of service, following retirement, she taught two years in Bogalusa, Louisiana.
She was married to the late Willie R. Young and to this union, a daughter, Amya Clancy, She was a lifelong member of Zion Community Church of God where she served as Sunday School teacher, chairperson of the Board of Education, president of the Christian Women Connection, worship leader and member of the Church Council.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Marvin Johnson, sisters-in-law, Diane Johnson and Frances Kay Johnson.
She is survived by her daughter, Amya Stewart; siblings, Albert Johnson Jr., James (Evelyn), Rev. Nathan J. Johnson, Martha (Rev. Isaac) Carter and Wilbert (Maxine) Johnson; aunts, Melvin Latham-Johnson and Reecie Gatlin, uncle, E. N. (Lou Jean) Newsome; sister-in-law, Versie Johnson and many other relatives and friends.
