Back-to-School Family Fun day a great success despite extreme heat

Over 100 children and 130 adults took part in the Project H.O.P.E. Community Services Back-to-School Family Fun Day held Aug. 5 in Prentiss. The event was held at Raisola Park at the House of Refuge on Highway 13 North.
Save the Children’s partner Amazon handed out over 200 book bags filled with school supplies. Three barbers were on site for complimentary back-to-school haircuts.
Help Me Grow conducted a variety of developmental screenings, including Autism. Blood glucose and blood pressure checks were conducted as well. Hope Collective in Columbia distributed nutritious food boxes and the Prentiss Fire Department was on hand for water fun to help the children beat the heat.
Arts and crafts activities were available for all for all ages and books and resources for families were distributed.
Partners and participants included Save the Children, Youth Villages, Five County Head Start, Families as Allies, MS Early Childhood Association, Save the Children, Ricky Davis Candidate for Sheriff Jeff Davis County, LaLa’s Sno Cones and Treats, Hope Community Collective Fire Department, Help Me Grow, Susan Hoxie with Jefferson Davis County 4-H, House of Refuge, Val’s True Elegance, Student volunteers from Jefferson Davis County Schools, church and community volunteers and Jessie Burns.
